Mika Newton shares her secrets
Public Kids
Mika, I know that you get along with kids well, and children like you even more. What style do you prefer in kids’ fashion?
Mika Newton
It is true, children have a special place in my life. And as for me, I was a very creative child. I decided I wanted to be a singer when I was only 5 years old. I remember that I always wore my mother’s clothes and “made performances”. I used to rummage through her closet, and I was my own stylist. I loved mixing colours. My grandmother had an even more extensive wardrobe with unique pieces, so my style was never casual :). Oh, she had beautiful, elegant dresses. I still remember her stunning green shiny dress. And my experiments with my mother’s and grandmother’s wardrobe lasted for years.

A lot of your outfits are designer-made. You are directly involved in the development of some of them. Have you ever thought about creating your own clothing line, and would it be interesting for you to work in the world of kids’ fashion?
Mika Newton
I used to sew all clothes for my dolls. I was looking for the best fabric I could find and created different looks. So, I think that sooner or later, I will make something of my own for the kids too. In the US, by the way, there is a fantastic range of clothes for children. Unfortunately, we don’t have such variety in Ukraine.

You live in the heart of the global film industry. Do you like the local style, and can you say that it’s a particular LA style?
Mika Newton
LA clearly has its own style. I would say everyone expresses their personalities. Imagine the craziest look, and I’m sure you can see it here. There are a lot of creative people who are setting the bar high for other fashion lovers. As for me, I have become more practical and casual over some time.

What’s your favorite American designer?
Mika Newton
I love Tom Ford. He has an unreal vision of everything. Also, an excellent cosmetics line.

The manner of raising children in America is very different from how you were brought up. Can you point the key difference and what way of parenting would you apply to your children?
Mika Newton
The most important thing is that children have the same rights as adults. I will definitely give my kids the freedom of choice. I will not forbid dreaming and saying that something is not possible. I will support whatever style of clothing my child chooses. And most importantly, I will teach that nobody’s perfect. We all make mistakes, and that’s okay. We learn only from mistakes.

In America, early marriages and families are pretty rare. Have you changed your attitude to age, children, career and parenting after moving to the states, that you need to achieve everything before 30, or you stick to Ukrainian values?
Mika Newton
To be honest, I’ve always known that I would not marry before 30. I believe that the period from 20 to 20 is significant in life when we evolve as personalities. And I understand that for these reasons, well, it is not possible to pay a lot of attention to kids, to see to their needs, because we are focused on ourselves and our career. A 20-year-old me and a 30-year-old me are two different people. And two different mothers. I in no way criticise mothers who gave birth early. This is a colossal work that deserves respect. But I think I’m so comfortable in the US because I share the American way of thinking. In the US, mothers don’t set their daughters to get married successfully, as if it’s the most significant achievement in life. The most important thing is to be a happy person, and a woman can create and change the world for the better, just as any man.

Nowadays, the Black-on-Black style a-la Rick Owens or Yohji Yamamoto is very popular. Do you like this trend, and do you think this style will become popular in children’s fashion?
Mika Newton
I support people wearing what they like and expressing themselves. But black-on-black is not my jam. I agree with Anna Wintour that wearing all black is boring. I don’t think kids would stick to this style, they like bright colours.

And finally, a little personal question:) Do you plan a family and children, and is there someone in your life with whom you would be ready to carry out these plans?
Mika Newton
Of course, I am planning a family. I want at least two kids. And when everything works out, you will definitely know about it;)
